Most adult beginners are correctly sized on a 3/4 double bass, not a 4/4 — despite the naming convention, a full 4/4 is oversized for the great majority of adult players. A local music shop or teacher can confirm the right size in person.
Renting is especially strongly recommended for double bass, arguably more so than for any other orchestral string instrument, because of the instrument’s size, weight, and transport difficulty combined with the likelihood of needing a size change for younger players.
