Review Methodology

Every review, comparison, and buying guide on this site carries a visible review-basis label, so you always know what a recommendation is based on. There are three:

Hands-on tested

We (or a named tester credited on the page) have physically played or examined the instrument ourselves.

Reviewed with an expert

Findings were checked with a named, credentialed musician, teacher, or repair technician engaged specifically for that subject area.

Specification and market analysis

Where hands-on testing or expert review hasn’t happened yet, recommendations are built from manufacturer specifications, published reviews, and market data — clearly labeled as such rather than presented as first-hand experience.

Why this matters

A lot of “best of” lists blur the line between someone who’s actually played an instrument and someone who’s summarized a spec sheet. We’d rather label the difference than hide it.
