Brand history

Ludwig Drums was founded December 11, 1909, in Chicago, Illinois, by brothers William F. and Theobald Ludwig, sons of a German immigrant, originally built around a bass drum pedal the brothers had invented. By 1923 the company was the largest drum manufacturer in the world. Sourced: en.wikipedia.org

The brand became widely recognized after Ringo Starr displayed the Ludwig logo on his bass drum during the Beatles' 1964 US television debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. Sourced: en.wikipedia.org

Compared with meaningful competitors

BrandComparison pointSourcing
Yamaha Ludwig traces to 1909 as a dedicated drum-and-percussion manufacturer and was the world's largest drum manufacturer by 1923, positioning it as a percussion specialist with one of the longest histories in the category. Yamaha, by contrast, is a multi-category instrument manufacturer whose percussion line is one part of a much broader wind, brass, string, keyboard, and percussion catalog. Source
Pearl Both Ludwig (founded 1909, Chicago) and Pearl (founded 1946, Tokyo) are dedicated percussion specialists rather than multi-instrument-category brands, though Ludwig's history is roughly 37 years longer. Pearl began as a music-stand manufacturer before shifting to drums in 1950, while Ludwig was built around drum manufacturing (originating with a bass drum pedal invention) from its founding. Source
